He has the experience to forge the thoughtful, common-sense compromises that will protect anxious taxpayers from an undue burden.

"Since leaving office, I have watched the County Legislature, attended its meetings, and kept current with the issues. Lately, I have been distressed to witness a high level of confusion, disorder, and blatant partisanship amoung legislators. Deep divisions between the political parties, and between ideological factions within the same party hamper effectiveness and do nothing to speed the handling of the people’s business. In the past, the Tompkins County Legislature was a model of good government. I will work to restore that by encouraging teamwork and a high level of trust among its members.

In the midst of the national recession, we are facing a severe fiscal crisis. Despite Tompkins County’s education-based economy, people are losing jobs, factories are downsizing, and small businesses are closing. The county is facing a budget shortfall of over $4 million while the demand for state mandated services is increasing. Keeping the budget in the black will take spending cuts in addition to revenues. We cannot expect overstressed real property taxpayers to shoulder the entire burden.

While protecting the most vulnerable of our population, and the environment, we must provide basic public safety, and maintain our transportation system. I have the experience and can provide leadership to help forge essential fiscal compromises in these troubled times."
